If you're flying internationally for the first time or don't travel by air frequently, you may be wondering how early you should check in for an international flight. Arriving at the airport at the right time not only helps you complete all departure procedures smoothly but also gives you more time to relax before boarding.
In this article, Airport Connects provides the latest check-in recommendations, practical travel tips, and an easier way to enjoy a premium airport lounge at Terminal 2 – Noi Bai International Airport.
How early should you check in for an international flight? Check-in counter opening hours
According to recommendations from airlines and airport operators, passengers should arrive at the airport approximately three hours before departure for international flights.
This allows sufficient time to complete check-in, baggage drop (if applicable), security screening, immigration procedures, and travel to the departure gate without rushing. During peak travel periods such as holidays or major vacation seasons, arriving even earlier is recommended due to increased passenger volume.
International check-in counter opening and closing times
If you're wondering how early to arrive at the airport for Vietjet or how early Vietnam Airlines passengers should arrive, both airlines generally recommend arriving around three hours before departure for international flights.
It's equally important to know when check-in counters close. For most international flights, check-in closes 50 minutes before departure, although certain airports and routes may require passengers to complete check-in 60 minutes before departure. Arriving after the check-in deadline may result in denied boarding, even if the flight has not yet departed.
While schedules may vary depending on the airline and airport, international check-in generally follows the timetable below:
|
Airline |
Check-in Opens |
Check-in Closes |
|
Vietnam Airlines |
3 hours before departure |
50 minutes before departure* |
|
Vietjet Air |

Bamboo Airways |

*Certain airports, including Paris (CDG), Frankfurt (FRA), London Heathrow (LHR), San Francisco (SFO), and Kuala Lumpur (KUL), close Vietnam Airlines check-in counters 60 minutes before departure.
**Some Vietjet international routes, including Japan, South Korea, and India, require passengers to complete check-in at least 60 minutes before departure.
***Closing times may vary depending on the airport and specific flight. Please refer to your ticket or the airline's official website before departure.
Note: Check-in times are subject to change according to airport and airline regulations. Always verify the latest information before your trip.
Do you still need to arrive early if you've checked in online?
Many passengers assume that online check-in allows them to arrive at the airport shortly before departure. However, for international flights, arriving around three hours before departure is still strongly recommended.
Online check-in does not replace mandatory procedures such as passport and visa verification (where applicable), baggage drop, security screening, and immigration clearance.
Therefore, whether you're wondering how early to complete online check-in for international flights or how early to arrive after checking in online, the recommendation remains the same: arrive approximately three hours before departure.
Tips to avoid missing your international flight
Knowing how early to check in for an international flight is important, but arriving early alone isn't enough. Many passengers still miss flights because of incomplete documents, overlooked flight updates, or assuming online check-in completes all departure formalities.
Here are several practical tips to help your journey go more smoothly.
Prepare all required travel documents
For international travel, a valid passport is mandatory, and many destinations require passports to remain valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry.
Depending on your destination, you should also verify your visa requirements, airline ticket, electronic boarding pass, and any additional documents required by local authorities.
Before leaving home, double-check that your name, date of birth, and passport number exactly match the information on your booking. Even minor discrepancies may delay your departure or prevent boarding.
Check in online, but still arrive on time
Many travelers choose online check-in to reduce waiting time at the airport. However, online check-in does not mean you can arrive just before boarding.
Most airlines allow online check-in from 24 hours before departure, although this may vary by route. Even after checking in online, international passengers should still arrive approximately three hours before departure to complete document verification, baggage drop, security screening, and immigration.
Monitor flight updates
Departure gates and check-in counters may change due to operational reasons. In addition to monitoring airline emails and notifications, passengers should regularly check airport information displays or official airline applications for the latest updates.
At large international airports, walking from security screening to the boarding gate can take 10-20 minutes, so avoid waiting until the final boarding announcement before heading to your gate.
Review baggage regulations before departure
Each airline and destination has its own regulations regarding carry-on baggage, checked baggage, and restricted or prohibited items.
Reviewing these requirements before arriving at the airport can help you avoid additional fees, baggage repacking, or delays during check-in.
Seek assistance immediately if you're running late
If traffic, unexpected situations, or other circumstances may cause you to miss your flight, contact airline ground staff or customer service as soon as you arrive at the airport.
Prompt communication allows the airline to assess your situation and provide assistance in accordance with its applicable policies whenever possible.
What should you do if you arrive at the airport early?
After allowing enough time to check in for your international flight, many passengers find themselves with one or two hours before boarding. However, not everyone knows how to make the most of this waiting time.
Many travelers end up sitting in crowded public seating areas, searching for charging outlets, trying to work in noisy environments, or looking after young children while waiting. Dining options can also be limited, particularly during peak travel hours.
That's why many passengers choose an airport lounge to turn waiting time into an opportunity to relax, work, or enjoy a meal in a quieter, more comfortable setting.
